San Diego, San Diego, San Diego! Whoever missed this trip missed a good one. The team stayed at the DoubleTree Golf Resort and Hotel in Rancho Bernardo. Most of our people got upgraded to a golf course side room, but those that didn't got to stay next to the pool or in the garden. Me, I got the best view of the local 7-11 out of my window, but then again, Who Am I? It was very hot and humid and the schedule was brutal, as each team played 3 games on Saturday. Me, I was at the gym at 8:00 am for a first game and left the gym at 9:00 PM after our last game; but then again, Who Am I? Let's talk b-ball, or more specifically, Knights b-ball! The Boys 3rd, our rabid JYDs took to the court as partners with our Boys 4th, the Oh-Zoners; and showed what could've/might've been by playing in the 4th grade division and going 2 wins and 2 losses. The 2 losses were only by 3 and 3 and the 2 wins were by 26 and 28! Coaches SpinDog Billings and The Big O Oh did a fab-gear job of keeping our boys in every game. Our Boys 6th, under the capable coaching of the BK Broiler, Brad Kojaku; went out the first day and served notice to all that the Knights were in town and immediately knocked off the top Boys 6th team in NJB, the Encinitas Tide. Last year, our boys played the Tide and they whupped us by over 30 with one hand tied behind their backs. This year, though, Encinitas found out that little Knights do grow up to be Big Knights and with each year that passes, our skill level grows with us. In double OT, our Knights prevailed on the scoreboard with Coach BK coming a little closer to finally using that head/scalp wax detailing machine that the Poi Poi Princess (wife Cindy) bought him for X-Mas. A few more games like that one and Coach B will lose enough hair to be qualified to find work as a billiard ball! Our Knights Boys 6th went 1-3, losing in the semi-finals to the Las Vegas All Star Monsters called Poly Nation. The Knights 7th had a rough weekend. Their weekend wasn't about playing and winning or losing mere games. Theirs was a weekend of soul searching and self discovery. With Coach Jason at the helm, he and the boys were forced to look at what they hadn't accomplished the year before, and how time has indeed proceeded to move without them. Also new to the boys was playing the game with a girl. Kristen Mejia played with our Boys 7th and played WELL! She showed why she will be one of the top girls around the South Bay in the next four years! The Knights 7th finished 1-2, but are now ready to face the coming year with a new attitude and some new additions to their roster. Their starting point is NOW. Keep checking their progress as the year progresses. I know they will make us all proud as our new representatives as our premier Boys 8th team. Our Knights High School Boys played in the JV division, even though they were all soon-to-be sophs and two wanna-be sophs but are juniors.
They played well enough to go 4-2, and in every game, all the way.
Being the smallest didn't help, and 6 games in 2 days This weekend provided many a lesson for each team that made the trip. This was a tournament like the old days. Games in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening. Games, games, games. In between, each boy learned about how to prepare for a grueling day and how to manage their time, their fluids, and their food intake. In short, they all grew up a little last weekend. Thanks to all who made the sacrifice and made the trek to San Diego. I know there wasn't much time for you all to clump together, but the advances made by your boys/girls should have been more than rewarding.
Thanks to all who made my mom and my dad feel so welcome. Thanks to
TooTall Yule who made my dad's year by Sorry I didn't get to see you all, but all those games in that heat really did me in. If it wasn't for the view of the 7-11, I don't know what I would have done. See you all in Ventura as the Knights will take 7 teams to the coast! Me, it looks like I will try and coach 4 teams with 2 games each a day on Saturday, so don't come looking for me around the pool; but then again, Who Am I ANYWAY? Cheers! |
